Lost in the hoopla over last week's unveiling of the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 at the 2011 Chicago Auto Show was Chevy's announcement that the brand will sell 500 replicas of the 2011 Chevrolet Camaro SS Convertible that will pace this year's Indianapolis 500.

The cars will all be powered by the SS model's 6.2-liter, 426-horsepower (400 with an automatic transmission) V-8. Buyers will be able to choose between the six-speed manual and the six-speed automatic transmissions.

In a homage to the 1969 Camaro that paced the Brickyard, the 2011 edition has a Summit White paint job with orange stripes and door graphics. The interior has orange trim, white door panels and instrument panel, an extension of the exterior stripes, and Indy 500 logos embossed into the front-seat headrests.

In a nice bit of serendipity, both Chevrolet and the Indy 500 turn 100 years old in 2011. The 2011 Camaro pace car is the 22nd Chevy and seventh Camaro to pace the famous race.

Chevrolet's press release doesn't mention an MSRP, but given the rarity of these cars, we expect the price can be summed up in two words: A lot.
